What is fibre HDMI?

Fibre HDMI converts the signal to light at one end and back at the other, which is how a run can be twenty metres instead of five.

In plain language

An active optical cable has electronics moulded into its connectors. The source end turns the electrical signal into light, the display end turns it back. Light does not degrade over distance the way copper does, so runs of ten, twenty or fifty metres become practical.

Why it matters in your setup

Two things about fibre HDMI surprise people. It is directional — the connectors are marked source and display, and swapping them means no picture at all. And it needs power, drawn from the HDMI port or a supplied USB lead; a port that is stingy with current can make a perfectly good cable fail intermittently.

Because of both, a fibre cable failure often looks like a device fault. Checking direction and power first saves a lot of time.
